Several independent tests have been conducted to determine the resistance of Toughbooks to external forces. Toughbooks have also inadvertently served as bulletproof vests. Design All Toughbook models have a magnesium alloy case. Many current models have LCD panels designed specifically for visibility during daylight use. Other design elements include a shock-mounted hard drive and, on many models, a moisture and dust-resistant LCD, keyboard and touchpad. Toughbook case. Panasonic markets the Toughbook series in several configurations ranging from business and “semi-rugged” to “fully rugged” in both laptop and Tablet PC configurations, as well as in several specialty designs with numerous customizable add-on features. Panasonic’s fully rugged and some semi-rugged laptops have no cooling fan and instead dissipate the heat “evenly” through the chassis. Having no fan ensures a better seal against dust and moisture. Additionally, a lack of a cooling fan can lead to longer battery life, quieter operation, and fewer moving components. However, this means Panasonic must design additional proprietary solutions at additional costs. To reduce heat and power consumption, many laptops come with lower voltage Intel processors and have numerous automatic power management functions. Some models, such as the lightweight W8, are US …

More than anything else, I want the laptop to last a few years under normal to heavy use, and the laptop case to protect the motherboard and electronics from excessive flex, and offer good resistance to warping and cracking, case-joints loosening and separating, keys coming off, buttons sticking, etc.
What’s the least amount of money I’ll need to spend?
I’m thinking around 0 – 0 and hoping this will be enough; I’m willing to shop new, refurbished, or gently-used if a good deal turns up.
I also MUCH prefer a matte screen (not glossy), screen size between 12 and 14", sturdy/tactile/ergonomic keyboard, and weight under about 6 lbs (if possible).
Don’t need a GPU, Bluetooth, or other bells and whistles, and looks/styling are a relatively low priority.
I’ve done a bit of research, and thus far the standout candiates, in terms of basic overall perfomance per dollar, seem to be:
* Dell Latitude E6400 / D830 / D820
* IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T400 / T61 / T60
Going back a "generation" includes refurbished units or gently-used "cream-puffs" (which may be necessary given my budget constraints??).
My impression is that either one of these lines are good bets, and that both offer good customer support (correct me if I’m wrong or naive here).
Am I overlooking any other worthy candidates? I know Panasonic makes their Toughbook, but I don’t think I want/need quite that much of a "tank".
[...and IF I were willing to consider a "well-engineered" plastic case, if such a thing exists -- what other choices might I have, how much $ savings could I realize, and what models would you recommend?]
