I need a portable computing device that is smaller than a laptop but bigger than a PDA or handheld. I need something that can do spreadsheets, word docs, and web. Does such a device exist?
Could I get my laptop to connect to a wireless access point and ‘’steam” the connection through a Ethernet cable to another computer?
I don’t have a wifi card on my desktop but I need to access to Internet for maintenance.
I’ve had this problem before on my laptop and I still don’t understand it. I would click on a video and there is a complete black screen. The video I selected doesn’t buffer or play. Is/Has anyone having/had the same problem? Did you understand what was going on? YouTube isn’t undergoing maintenance right now so what could be wrong?
I am looking for a portable laptop that will be mostly used for basic computing (internet, journaling, pics and music).
Which format is better? I want to hear from the REAL users…not just the techies that write reveiews.

I want to buy something like a small word processor, like a laptop, but no other computing except word processing, just for writing, you turn it on and there is a blank screen, and you type, and then maybe there’s a USB on it to transfer the documents to a real computer. Do they make these?
I’m interested in buying a refurbished laptop. The sites tell me that they come with 30 day warranties which is fine. However, does anyone know if you are allowed to buy a manufacturer’s extended warranty (2,3,4, accidental, maintenance type extended services)?
Or are you only limited to the 30 day whatever online store you bought it from?
When I start up my laptop there is a little under score line that blinks then a blue screen comes up. In the blue screen there is a number of things i can click on such as "system, onboard devices, video, security, power management, maintenance, POST behavior and Wireless" I can only use the scroll keys and enter. I have no idea what is going on. What do i do? I do not have a system recovery disk.
i ran a test on it and it is say ing that there is no hadr drive detected. what does that mean and what do i do now? is my laptop basically no good now?

My cousin’s laptop is crappy and want to fix it for her; however, every time I run a program, or try to open a file that I’ve downloaded, it inconveniently opens iTunes instead. Additionally, I try to open system maintenance, and it redirects to iTunes. I don’t want to uninstall iTunes or boot the computer. Help, please!
Previously, my cousin used her laptop and iTunes for her iPhone. Every time I open a file or program, the laptop immediately opens iTunes instead. I can’t access anything properly besides the web browser.
my laptop had a problem in the cooling system where i think the fan wasn’t working right and my computer used to freeze and hang up.
and i’am sure 100% it’s not because any of software problems like errors and viruses where i have reinstalled the windows and i checked my computer for viruses with different softwares and it still hanged up…………
after getting it into maintenance and fixing it up by non experts, my laptop now becomes hot (i sometimes smell smoke) but it never freezes and the fan now doesn’t work at all but the computer goes on without freezing…
does the fan have a heat sensor or something?
i’am afraid someone removed the sensors so the laptop keeps heating without any response with the windows
i’am afraid the processor may burn suddenly without any warnings…
any suggestions………………
how about the external usb cooling fans, are they good???
It’s livejournal. And anything that has to do with it (communities, personal journals, icons being hosted by livejournal etc.)
The thing is, it loads really, REALLY slowly on my laptop. It’s either I get frustrated and stop loading it altogether, or wait for it (usually takes around five minutes to load the sign in page), and then be greeted by what looks like a half-loaded site (broken html format, images not showing up, all text in Times New Roman).
Here are the other circumstances:
1.) Already tried to access livejournal in different browsers (IE, FF, and Chrome to be exact) in my laptop, and all loaded Livejournal very slowly.
2.) I tried to access livejournal using the same connection (at home, which is the one I’m using right now) through my ipod and desktop, and livejournal loaded there just fine. Mind you, my connection is pretty fast.
3.) I tried to access livejournal using a different connection, and livejournal loaded properly.
4.) Tried turning off utorrent (the only thing that I could think of that could be slowing down my connection – which, to be honest, has yet to occur before) and loading livejournal, still nothing. Other sites still work, regardless of utorrent running or not.
I’ve already tried the following solutions, to no avail:
1.) clear my cache/cookies/history for ALL of my browsers.
2.) used /flushdns
3.) check if livejournal is undergoing maintenance (and no, they are not).
Other sites are working as they should, without showing signs of slowing down. It’s just Livejournal specifically that’s wounding up wrong.
Oddly enough, there are random (short) moments where livejournal would just load fine. And then I click on another page (comments), and it’s back to loading really slowly again.
I don’t know what to do anymore :(
for windows vista, i think you need 2.0 GHz P4 or something,
it says on my control panel > system and maintenance > system:
Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T1600 @ 1.66GHz 1.66 GHz
i don’t really understand much of this, but basically i can tell i don’t have enough GHz, and is there any way of getting more without buying a new laptop?
p.s, i know i definitely have enough memory space.
p.p.s, my laptop is a toshiba, satellite

I’ve had this laptop about a year now, it’s spent a lot of time on a bed which means the air-intakes are sucking air up from through my matress, and hence there might be a lot of crap in there. Does anyone know the best way of cleaning it up?
I’ve never cleaned it before, so advice on giving it a proper spring clean inside, and out (i.e. internal circuit boards/fans and under the keys o the keyboard) would be gratefully appreciated. I don’t really mind about voiding any warranties, putting the laptop at risk, so please don’t suggest I take it to a professional, but if you do offer risky advice, please state that somewhere in your response :).
Also links to maintenance manuals or anything would be cool too..I would like to know how to safely get at the innards and know how to get it all back together when I’ve finished.
Cheers All
Can someone give me tips on caring for my laptop? It frequently feels hot to the touch (even if I have not been using it all that long) and sometimes makes high-pitched squealing noises if I touch a certain point (but only sometimes). The CD-DVD drive will only open unless I use the "eject" command on My Computer, and it recently has stopped reading discs.
I don’t have money for computer repair, but I would like to keep my computer functional for as long as possible (and obviously I understand very little about computer maintenance… one of those silly university students). From my description, does it sound like it will die/crash/spontaneously combust in the near future?
I’m trying to play runescape on my new laptop but when I choose a world it gives an error page, it says error: website may be under maintenance. It gives the option to refresh but just goes back to the same page. But my bro is online on RS on the family computer upstairs. Any suggestions or help? Please

I don’t want it because its kinda lame, its very low end on everything, and I know we don’t have a lot of money, but I want something that will play tf2 on low setting so I can play at my friends house with ease, with out lugging a large desk top around. and I want this one.
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0308587
she won’t get it because she wants it only for school and told me if I want it I can get it my self if I don’t want her help. the actual lap top she wants to get me is not a referb as the first is, and is about 500$ I’m saving her mom and she is pissed at me. and saving money by not buying and trying to get her to help me get parts and a monitor for a gaming computer to play one game.
how do I try to convince her to let me do this. she got me a car to only go to school and small driving and I do that and I never ask for gas, and never really ask her or my dad for money for maintenance (I know some one that works in an auto body shop to help me) and I don’t do drugs and drink like other kids, but when ever I ask her she always goes off topic and diverts it to something bad or something I could do from years ago. how do I deal with her, I’ve been doing it for the last 19 years, but lately my chest starts hurting and I get dizzy every time I try to reason.
I don’t work at the moment I have been working for a long time, and I know quite a lot about computers, and the actual computer costs 599$ now that I looked at the paper, its just the link to the same thing not in the store. what I really want is about 9 but I am trying to keep it cheep. the only difference is one warranty is a year , the other is 90 days.
I more or less want a compromise with my mom and me. her getting me a cheap school computer, and me getting something that will play the one thing I want, with our her buying me all the parts to build a new desk top.
she’s the one out money, either way she is buying me about 900$ in computer parts to build a gaming desk top including monitor, if she gets me that lap top I don’t need the parts to build a computer, I have something to do what I want, and what she wants.
I wll explain: My Mechanic basicallly says "if it aint broke, dont fix it." This applies, for him, to EVERYTHING. Water Pump, Fuel Pump, etc.. He says "Wait for it to develop a Problem, and if you have the money to do a test, replace the part, since you suspect it." (This is also the one that put 1/3 the old BROWN Trans fluid back in my NEW 82,000 Trans, now at 90,000 miles.. I will Drain anD fill that with NEW and no Flushing.)
I believe that Preventative Maintenance is Good. Like now.. I suspect Fuel Pump, though i will try the Gas first, then Filter (trying to eliminate Possibles.) It made me think of the Mechanic..
Basically, we have come to an arrangement,, if i have the money, and have the part, he will do whatever Job i ask for 1/3 to 1/2 the "Rate." I was thinking Fuel Filter.. I have No Idea how one diagnoses a Vacuum line OR uses a Scan Tool for OBD1.. Bt i know this arrangement is good. back last year, my 85 Escort had Engine trouble. The Head Gasket was rebuilt and i had NO Money.. so i installed MotorData Program and bought a little Laptop.. he cna now print Invoices, and every job he does now.. Exploded Diagrams, etc. And he knows the car, he put the "New: Trans in.
Sooo… what are your thoughts on this "Preventative maintenance," sinc if it DOES come to Fuel Pump Dying (gas and Filter dont lick issue,) ill be taking it there, car still runs ok when warmed up like 15 or 20 minutes in, but the Stumbling on Acceleration DOES surface sometimes.. Thanks.

So my dad is heavily pressuring me into getting a Mac, but I’m just not that interested. I’d rather stick with a PC (but I suppose I’m not entirely against getting a Mac).
I’m undeclared right now, but I’m thinking of going into International Affairs, so I shouldn’t really need anything special for that.
Primarily, I’m concerned about disk space. Both the desktop and laptop that I have had my iTunes library on have subsequently had severe disk space problems. My music is 30+ GB, but I have about a dozen movies that I plan on putting on to my new laptop, and I hope to get an iTouch whenever they release a 64 GB one, so I’ll need room for apps and whatnot as well. Also, I might be installing Sims 3, so long as it isn’t going to totally ruin anything.
Of course, battery life would be nice… I’d also like something that won’t overheat (although I suppose that has more to do with maintenance).
I’m going to Northeastern, and they are certified to fix problems with Macs and Dells, so I thought it might be best to look primarly at Dells. I’ve heard from a few people that HPs are the best PCs, but my mom said someone at Northeastern highly advised against them.
I don’t really have a price range; I’d rather invest some money into something that I know will fit my needs and last.
Btw, am I totally stupid for not wanting a Mac? Vista’s certainly not the best, but I’m used to it, and it doesn’t really bother me all that much.
Any advice is greatly appreciated! :)
" "my dad is heavily pressuring me into getting a Mac"
Why? Maybe he’s got good reasons – better than those you can get here. It looks like he’s telling you to buy, rather than footing the bill himself. A Mac is going to set you back, especially if you get Applecare."
Because some guy at work told him it was the best, lol. He point blank told me he is only buying me a Mac. (But I know that if I really convince him I only want a PC, he’ll still pay… even if he didn’t, I’ve got enough graduation money saved up.)
