laptop use/ maintenance?
I need to use my TOSHIBA Satellite A40 laptop for extensive academic and other works (like movie, music, internet). I use it like desktop – always from line power, no mobility and it is turned on almost 12 hrs everyday. Is that OK? I am worried if I am over-using it– keeping it on long hours and doing so many things. Is it true that unlike desktop which is more rugged I should use my laptop more ’softly’, more carefully,…. Should I use less hours per day? Do you have any tips or adivice for me who needs to use computers about 8-10 hours a day.

thats not that bad, just dont keep it in the heat, and dont do a lot of activities at once on it, and it should run fine. just dont look at porn on ur computer either, cus that will seriously fuk up a computer… badly
As long as the laptop can breath.. it will be fine. Dont overheat it!
it should be on as long as you are using it, computers are stupid it will not know when you go to sleep it will keep running
Your Toshiba wouldn’t have been my choice for laptops, but that’s another topic.
The only thing I don’t recommend is for your laptop to "hybernate" because it’s more vulnerable to worms and viruses.Otherwise, the 12 hours is fine.
Contact me if you have more questions.
Ok, here some advice i have….maybe it will helps…
Always keep Laptops off floor
While on the floor laptops are easily stepped on, pets tend to use them for toys and small children will play with them.
Always use a surge protector
A power surge can happen at anytime, anywhere and ultimately destroy your laptop.
Don’t keep paper work in between screen and keypad.
Paper can scratch the screen leaving a costly bill to have it replaced.
Never leave your laptop in a cold environment.
When you bring your laptop into a warm place condensation will form and may cause electrical shocks throughout your laptop. Also if you turn it on while it’s still cold this can lead to overloading.
Don’t place your laptop on soft surfaces.
This will block off air vents and overheat your laptop.
Don’t drop it while your carrying it.
A good leather case with separate compartments is the safest way to carry your laptop. Make sure the case has separate compartments for add-ons this will avoid scratches over your laptop.
Never drink coffee or any liquid around your laptop.
It has been proven that laptops don’t like liquids .
Lastly never try to fix your laptop yourself
Laptops have many small parts that can easily be broken, misplaced and shocked. Leave it to the professionals, leave it to Laptop Repairs!
you can use it 24 hours a day, nothing gonna happen to it. But you must attach some extra few components to relieve it off some prssure.
Like an external USB keyboard, if you use the laptop keyboard too muxh then , you will find some keys becoming less responsive with time.So it better to get an usb keyboard, and besides its cheap. Also get a USB mouse, although touchpad doesn’t get damaged on heavy use, it might get less responsive.
Try always using it in a Air Conditioned room. This will prevent the exaust fan from getting clogged with Dust.
Although you are using power all the time, remember to switch to battery once in a while. Keeping the battery fully charged and unused for a long time can reduce battery life, so go portable from time to time.
some extra: ( if you got too much cash)
If you are gonna watch DVDs too much , like 5 or 6 dvds a day. then get an external DVD ROM. If you gonna listen to music all day long then get an PCMCIA Creative Audigy. If you have VGA out, then buy a monitor and use the monitor instead of the laptops XGA or LCD. they have limited life span, probably 15200 hours. SO using it too much will definetly shorten its life span.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop. Bought it about a year ago. I have NOT turned it off except to upgrade RAM about 8 months ago. I’ve had no problems. I use it like a desktop with an external USB floppy drive attached, an external USB 250GB Maxtor hard drive attached, and Lexmark X1150 scanner/printer attached. I use it an average of 10 hrs a day, 7 days a week.
The only "special" thing I did was add a laptop cooler fan (that the laptop actually sits on.) The fan is by Antec (www.antec.com)
Hope this helps from someone who’s "been there, done that, got the T-shirt"
i use mine all the time too only mine is an HP
