How to install games to a portable HD and play in many different computers?
Is it possible we work around the registry so that any files needed to play would be on the portable disk rather than on the computer the game was installed on? if yes, how is this done? Links to tutorials? if not is there other methods we can use to run the game independently on the HD? Thanks

Surprisingly few games make any amendments to the registry that prevent them from being played on a different hard-drive.
I recently put a new system together, and added in my old hard drive as a second drive. In my old machine, the drive was C: and now it's D:, and my operating system registry has NO ENTRIES at all relating to the games on my old hard drive – yet they all run perfectly!
Install a game fully to your portable HD and I'd be very surprised if it didn't run on different machines (you may have to change setup each time you play, however, to cope with the power differences from machine to machine)
When you installed the game(s) did you notice whether at the end of the install it said registering xxx ?
It is likely that there are registry entries. You'll have to run regedit and search through the registry to find out. If you know the executable names (filename.exe) then you can search for those names.
