If you have the recovery disk, then it does not matter if the system has an admin password.. you can format that right of.. The problem would come if you have BIOS password..

The Power On password is set in the System BIOS options. It prevents unwanted users from accessing the computer. By default, Compaq does not set the Power On password. If you set the Power On password in the System BIOS options you will be prompted for it immediately after you power on the Notebook PC.
If this password is forgotten, a repair at an Compaq certified repair center is required to reset the computer. Please contact Compaq to schedule a repair. This service is not covered by the warranty.

However you could try this at your own risk :
Remove the real time clock (RTC) battery.
Wait approximately five minutes.
Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the notebook.
Connect AC power to the notebook. Do not reinsert any battery packs at this time.
Turn on the notebook.
All passwords and all CMOS settings have been cleared.

I've also heard (though not tested) that Award/AWARD/Compaq/compaq/COMPAQ may work...might work.. worth a shot..

Is the password on boot or is it before going into windows, If its on boot which i doubt then you would have to flash your bios, set your boot order CD first then boot from CD you don't need a password to format if the password s from windows.
