For all you comp gurus out there: What’s the best laptop for me, as I go on to med school?

here are the min requirements:
Core 2 Duo T7500, 14.1” WXGA, 2GB,80GB HDD (7200RPM),DVD RW,WLAN 802.11a/b/g, MS Vista Basic

I am wondering what comp you would get with my needs. I need something that’s
-quick at processing things, like websurfing and downloading,etc
-thin and light portability–so i can take to school when needed, but doesnt need to be ultraportable.
-lots of memory–we will have tons to store on our comps
-reliable and low-maintenance
-under 1000 dollars

Well, basically, I do computer maintenance at school, and I’ve run into the first problem I’ve ever come across. There was a laptop with an issue in System32, and I had to reformat the laptop fix it.

This was a school laptop with school info on it, etc. I reformatted it, every went fine, yada yada, drivers, etc. I came up with an error. The wireless networks (all of them) AND the LAN connections, none of them would correct properly, and I think it’s because the school has a protected network, and I need some kind of info put on the laptop so I can readd it to the school network. I’m not quite sure how to do this, can anybody help?

For about the past month or so, I’ve been set on getting this Dell 1545 laptop

but today my mom gave me an ad for office depot, and they have a HP with all the same things the dell has, and for the same price.
I wish I had a link to the HP, but the home depot website is doing maintenance

The only differences are

Dell – 15” screen
HP – 17”

and the Dell has Intel Pentium dual-core processor T4300 (2 stars)
and the HP has a Intel Duo processor (3 stars)

and many reviews on the HP laptop say that the speaker volume is very very low
and I’ve read that HP screens dont have very good resolution

I honestly dont know which one is better

Im looking for a laptop that is fast and durable
without spending over 0
AND HAS WINDOWS 7

I do a lot of HD video editing, and photoshoping
So I need a laptop that has a lot of RAM
and both of those laptops above have 4 gigs of RAM
which is pretty good

I need a hard drive with at least 200 gigs, But im hoping for 320
Because HD movies and high res photos eat up memory like no other

Music is basically my life, and I always have itunes running in the background listening to music while I surf the web and edit videos ect.
Im not too much of a gamer, but I still want a good processor

Im also using the internet, watching videos, school, downloading songs, ect, 99.9% of the time Im on my computer

If you dont know of a different laptop other then the two above, please help me choose between those two.

I really hope you can help me, Im pretty picky, because Im ALWAYS on the computer, and I dont know which one to get

I used my laptop as a home computer, most of the time I keep my laptop turned on with the power cable plugged in. Is it good to do that? or is it better to plug the power off whenever the laptop’s battery is full? Which one is good for my laptop’ maintenance?

Hey guys, need some help….My friend and I just purchased an existing website that we had went to for the last couple years to watch the most recent MMA fight videos…We know how to create and build a website, but the whole downloading, editing, and uploading the fight videos is taking way too long and we know that we need something better. So the question is, what type of laptop (has to be a laptop since we travel for work and are on the road all the time), is the beefiest to do al the aforementioned? Also, would we need to get an external hardrive, additional software?

My daughter’s birthday is coming up and I want to get her a laptop. She has been asking for one for a while because she’s "too old" (and probably "too cool") to be using her mother’s desktop Mac Pro. I would get her a desktop but she has made it very clear that she strongly prefers the cool teenage lifestyle that my laptop allows her to live when I let her borrow it from time to time.

I know she uses this site so I thought I should ask other kids her age, as well as any experts who may also be here. What laptop would a young teenager love to have? She doesn’t play any games but she uses Word, PowerPoint, and Excel a lot. She also listens to music, surfs the internet, and chats with her friends on iChat and other such applications.

I know how rough kids can be with their computers so I want something tough. For her first laptop I’d like to keep the price under or around 00-2500.

In terms of reliability, durability, warranty, ease of use, minimal maintenance, features, stability, and any other fun things kids want these days, what laptop or family of laptops should I consider? And how much should I expect to spend?
If it matters, we are located in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA.

I have a Lenovo/IBM T60 laptop. My battery life has been diminishing lately (around 2 hours when I used to get 4), so I left-clicked on my battery gauge, brought up the power manager, went to battery maintenance, and did a power gauge reset. This is supposed to fully charge, then fully discharge, then fully recharge my battery. I started this about nine hours ago. Now my battery is sitting at 1%, refusing to charge, and I have a message that says "irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one." I’m a college student, and I NEED my computer to run off of battery so I can bring it to class, etc.

Is there any way I can revive this one, or do I just have to buy a new one? And what made it do that, anyway???

How do I thoroughly clean my laptop? I mean, not just through "Performance and Maintenance."

I used to know this computer tech that cleaned by laptop by turning off my computer, and as soon as it was turning on, he would go somewhere else when there were all this "boxes" or files and he would highlight each one and delete it. After that, my laptop was sooooo fast.

So I’m strongly considering buying a Macbook for college. I really want something that is dependable, and works like it’s suppose to with no problems. So I was wondering peoples thoughts between the two.

Some specific questions I have:
Do Macbooks crash more than PCs?
If I would need to get either fixed which one would probably be cheaper to do so?

Anything else you may recommend or warn me about would be greatly appreciated. I’m not necessarily concerned with the initial cost of the laptops, but rather the reliability and maintenance between the two.

I have read many forums in which users have problems like in dell studio line the optical drive hangs up, touch pad doesn’t respond, motherboard & Backlight not working etc.
Also in Sony Vaio hard disk problem, keypad doesn’t work, wifi etc.

I am replacing the CPU fan on a T42 laptop following the instructions in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

But I cannot lift the fan from the GPU, I have applied a significant amount of force in the direction indicated by the HMM (pushing a lever between the fan and GPU).

I have removed the 3 screws from the fan assembly and removed the keyboard and wrist pad.

Has anyone does this that has any experience or thoughts that could help guide me?

Some times it runs just fine, but most of the time the screen goes blue and I get a bunch of white writing thats says an error has occurred and I need to shut down, if the problem persists to contact the person in charge of maintenance etc… Needless to say, its a PC, Windows XP. I bought the laptop two years ago and its not under warranty any more. Its a Dell Inspiron 9200. I think it may have something to do with my wireless adapter because when I disable it I don’t get the blue screen any more. When I enable it, I get the blue screen almost immediately. I’ve unistalled and re-installed it several times. I have Mc Afee and no viruses have been detected in many many scans.

My laptop was overheating pretty bad so I followed the Maintenance and Service Disassembly guide to take it apart and clean around the fan and heat sink with a compressed air. It was pretty clogged so I guess I figured out the overheating issue, but when I reassembled everything it will not turn back on. The LED light flashes for a second or two when I press the power button, but there are no fan noises and it just doesn’t come on. I don’t think I damaged anything in the assembly/disassembly but I am no computer expert so I won’t rule it out. Any suggestions on things I can check before I take it in for service?

Im trying to clean up my laptop so it loads and runs faster. I have already got rid of a ton of the items on my desktop so they are at a minimum and cleared unnecessary files through maintenance on my computer. I’m no expert on computers, but is there anything else you would suggest that i do just to get it to run faster? I have an HP pavillion notebook.

I tried to log on to facebook and it isnt letting me log on either on my ipod touch or the laptop. It says Account unavailable and that your account is under maintenance! This has happened before and is getting me really mad… Help me! What should I do?

I’ve disassembled my laptop a couple of times before usually to clean the CPU fan since I have a mobile sempron…..and make sure of course that the laptop is not powered when I do various maintenance on it ex. battery removal etc.

But…I’ve gotten occassional static shocks on it…..
The laptop is plugged into a 1300W Fellows Surge Protector….

any way I can reground it properly?
I got a screwdriver kit my surge protector, some rubbing alcohol qtips…

getting a vena notebook cooler and memory upgrade and new thermal paste if anyone is wondering about alternatives…

When I close my laptop, it automatically shuts down / disconnects from WiFi.

I need to close the laptop lid and have the hard drive and WiFi stay *on*…. because I’m using an external keyboard and external monitor…. so there’s no need to keep the laptop lid open.

In Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options…. I changed all the options to "never" but it still shuts off when I close the lid.

I’m running xp pro w/ a compaq v5000… checked the manual, can’t find anything.

So i got a sony vaio laptop about a month ago. I’m new to laptops,therefore i don’t have a lot of knowledge when it comes to maintenance. My question is, do you shut down a laptop ? or just log off ?
