Americans call them ‘notebooks’ or ‘portables’, I believe. We, the British, call them ‘laptops’ !
I am travelling from the Britain to the USA to buy a notebook (laptop). I need to know the names of some quality/reputable american magazines published in the USA which review and test notebooks so I can make an informed choice of which model/brand to buy…

My computer is completely shot… the desktop will come up but the start menu and everything on that bar will not load… The only way i can use my computer at all is through safe mode.

The "lap-top" computer has not been manufactured for a couple decades, yet people still call the Electronic Notebook or "notebook" mini portable computer a "lap top". Why do people use such baby talk when they do not call a car a "Model T" any more?

The "lap-top" computer was the size of a brief case, was very heavy and had old 1980s technology. It was famous for its high heat, some even setting card tables on fire and burning the legs of its users. The interim version that replaced the lap-top in the early 1990s never had a name, but the Electronic Notebook that replaced both in the mid-to-late 1990s was always and to this day is called an Electronic Notebook or simply, "notebook". The lap-top computer's lifespan was only about 7 to 10 years, so there are none around which function, and I have not seen a lap-top since 1997!

This is as bad as people calling the number zero "oh"; if you use a voice dialer to Washington D.C. saying "area code two-oh-two", that is really 2-6-2!

I had read tons of reviews and still cannot decide. I curently have a 3" box fan at the back of my computer and it is the noisiest little fan ever.

A friend of mine told me that one should disconnect the charger of a mobile phone or a notebook computer after they’re fully charged else the battery would get overcharged (hence damaged, shortening its life). I am of the belief that most cellphones and portable computers already cut-off the electricity supply to the device upon completion of charging, and there is no need to worry about overcharging.

What is the truth? Any other suggestions?

I have a great computer; a high-end HP that is less than 2 years old, but probably has the miles of a 6 year old computer because I'm on it a minimum of 16 hours a day.

The fan is getting louder and running more frequently. I really love this laptop and don't want to replace it just yet- can I do some sort of laptop maintenance to make sure it stays in good running condition?

I should also mention, I am nowhere near a service center and would have to do it myself most likely. It is also quite humid where I live and I can see that the salty air is corroding the screws slightly on the bottom of the laptop.

Suggestions anyone? Thanks!

I have been accepted to USMA and enter in '08. I'm fairly certain they issue Dell laptops to each cadet, but I am thinking about buying a laptop for personal use before I go (I am not taking this one to USMA!) but if I get one now, I might as well buy one that I will have for the next few years.

Can anyone tell me the EXACT make and model of the laptops used by the cadets at West Point, and if they should be the same for the 2008/2009 school year.

I live in texas…so you can imagine the weather.

in high school and our campus went wireless, so since then, i've been taking notes on my notebook comp. There's two huge tests on wednesday and I have this big v-ball game to play in tuesday night .

I was thinking about taking my notebook to school with me like I always do, but….I don't really wanna take it on the bus with me, so if I left it in the car, with the windows rolled down a little…..will that harm it?

we leave at 4 and prolly will get back by atleast 9…maybe later
