Truth be told, buying a rugged notebook pc, or a rugged laptop computer can be sort of tricky. Not everyone even knows what a rugged portable computer is, but rugged mobile computers are the trend in the marketplace and ruggedized, semi rugged, and fully rugged computers continue to be sound investments. But you do have to be careful. Many laptops are advertised and marketed as having the attributes of rugged computers without being authentic, or having the necessary credentials to be labeled as rugged portable computers.

Rugged Notebooks are specifically engineered to operate in tough conditions that include strong vibrations, extreme temperatures, and wet and dusty environments. These are conditions that the average off-the-shelf consumer brand laptop does not have a chance to survive in or around.

Notebooks and laptops have increasingly displaced desktop computers. This is because rugged portable computers tend to be more convenient and flexible due to the nature of being designed to be mobile. Yet, they provide many of the same capabilities of a desktop computer, and in the instance of rugged portable computers, sometimes even offer more unique and powerful features. There are even rugged convertible tablet computers.

Also for these same reasons, rugged notebooks and rugged laptops are manufactured with more powerful components and numerous ports. Displays are more sophisticated and often engineered for outdoor use, also known as sunlight readable displays. The most versatile of these are using a technology dubbed Transflective Display Technology.

Although the term “rugged notebook” is widely used interchangeably with the term “rugged laptop”,  notebooks are designed to be smaller than laptops, and the term was coined to distinguish the smaller, thinner and lighter mobile computers from the original rugged laptops.

Rugged computers do come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and lighter handheld devices are termed rugged handheld computers and rugged PDAs.

Smaller, more efficient, and more rugged mobile computers are now the preference over immobile desktops. People like, and also prefer the idea of being able to transport a personal computer with them just about wherever they want to work and play, and under most environmental conditions.

The advent of longer life batteries, and improvement and wider availability of wireless communications like Wi-Fi and WiMax are also helping to make rugged portable computing more attractive to the mass market.

It used to be that desktops were more powerful and easier to upgrade when it came to both hardware and software configurations. All of this is changing with laptops becoming a cheaper buying decision with all things being considered. Just in the last few years, the advantages of rugged computers have begun to drastically change the way people look at personal and business computing, as the performance of rugged laptops has markedly increased.
